The time of year where we pack our bags, head to that cabin in the woods, head out to the sink our feet into the sandy beaches, or taking that 2-week camping trip you've been looking forward to all year has finally come! You're packing quickly getting ready to relax and spend time with your family stress-free, and you might be forgetting some energy and money saving tips along the way! Don't come back home to the stress of wasted money, by following a few Energy Efficiency Tips!
Adjust your thermostat, STAT!
With no one in the home, there is no need to keep the systems running (of course unless pets are left behind). Keeping your thermostat set to 85 or even turning off your unit completely off is always recommended. You can save 2-3% for every degree you raise your thermostat in the summer, it adds up!
Water Heater Care!
Let's be honest, the only time we really think about our water heaters is a. when we use all the hot water up in the shower or b. when we have no hot water at all. However, before heading out to your destination it's recommended to shut off the circuit breaker to your water heater. If you have a gas heater, turn the valve off just to be safe. Just remember when you return to allow the hot water tap to run before you restore power or gas back to the unit to make sure the water tank isn't empty! You can cause significant damage to your unit if the tank is allowed to heat without water!
Unplug those Vampires!
TV's, microwaves, major appliances in general, suck electricity even when not in use. So before you leave, unplug everything that isn't necessary (coffee pots, digital clocks, chargers, game systems, electric razors, electric toothbrushes). Not only is this going to save you energy but eliminates the possibility of fire hazards if you happen to experience a power surge.
Lights On, Someone's Home!
Invest in automatic lighting. Unoccupied homes are easy targets for burglars. Build up of mail, no lights, no cars, no traffic in and out. Key signs you're probably on vacation. While leaving a light on or two in the home is a great safety idea, it's not a great idea energy wise. Smart lights come in a variety of options from elaborate systems to something a simple as a cell phone controlled device. This way you can again prevent fire hazards but also combat the unoccupied feel of your home while saving energy. Smart tip, you can even use them to turn on a radio or TV in the home to add acoustics to deter burglars as well!
Just following a few simple steps can help your wallet recover from vacation costs quickly. We at Hutton Power and Light, wish you and your family a safe, cool and fun-filled summer! Safe Travels!!!
