Why Is Aluminum Wiring a Problem?
Today, copper is the standard metal for all wiring in both residential and commercial properties. This has not always been the case. Due to the limited supply and high cost of copper in the ‘60s and ‘70s, aluminum wiring was used extensively in new construction and remodeling projects. They did this without knowing that there were dangers present in using aluminum wiring.
When problems with aluminum wiring started appearing in the ‘70s, building codes were modified to exclude its use. Although the switch was made to copper, there were about two million homes built using aluminum wiring, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. That includes homes that were built right here in Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads, and surrounding areas.
The reason this type of wiring presents such a fire hazard does not pertain to the aluminum wiring itself as much as the connector that is between the wire and the switch or outlet. At this connection point, the wire gets hot and burns off the insulation, and this causes a fire.
Signs Your Aluminum Wiring Is Causing Trouble
Since the problem with aluminum wiring is primarily due to bad connections between the wire and the receptacles, the signs of trouble are typically located at the outlet or switch.
You should get in touch with our electricians if you notice:
- Receptacles and switches are warm to the touch
- Soot or scorching behind a receptacle’s face plate
- Your lights are flickering without apparent cause
- Circuits that don’t work
- The smell of burning plastic near an outlet or switch
The best way to discover if you are at risk of danger from aluminum wiring is to have Hutton perform an electrical inspection. Our skilled electricians are trained to determine whether your aluminum wiring should be repaired or replaced. Once we conduct the inspection, we can help you determine the right course of action.
